Are the Hardy Boys Next !
Down in Alabama, State Representative Gerald Allen(R) is working to save their children from the influence of words that may prey apon their young minds. Mainly "homosexual" words either by plot, or the hand that spawned them. Gerald Allen is sponsoring a new bill that states that, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters."I don't look at it as censorship," says the state represenitive, "I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children."
So that books like "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker will have to go, because of the lesbian characters, and books by; Gore Vidal, Truman Capote, or even Tennessee Williams will have to go. The worst part of this is that some groups of people are mistakenly trampling the records of Tennessee Ernie Ford, and wondering what the homosexual message was contained in his slogan "it's pea pickin good."
That now leads us to the "Hardy Boys," what about them? What will Gerald Allen do when he is faced with this information I'm about to release to you. I myself have never read one of their books, or seen one of their t.v. shows, of which research shows it's been on the air at three different decades from the 1950's to the 1970's.
This information is provided by Maxim magazine from August of 1998. They have unearthed the possibility of homoerotic dialog contained in several of the books. They are as follows:
From Hunting for Hidden Gold:
* Frank managed to back close to his brother, and with his fingers, work at Joe's wrist bonds. "We sure pulled a boner," Frank said grimly...
* Inside the tunnel mouth the passage widened, giving the boys room to mount...
From the Secret of Skull Mountain:
* Joe had supplied the unhappy Chet with shirt and pants which fit him like a sausage skin...
From What Happened at Midnight
* Eventually the clock struck the hour of midnight. The Hardy boys looked at one another. "Remember Joe, what happened the last dance we had?"
From The Missing Chums:
* "I've got a ride for you boys." One of the young boys smiled at Frank...
* At this juncture the rear of [the acrobat's] trousers was presented as a tempting mark to the waiting Chet...
From The Mystery of the Flying Express:
* "I shall come to the point at once. My name is Bumper. I understand you young gentlemen are from the East." Frank felt himself stiffening.
From The House on the Cliff:
* Gently, the boys helped remove his clothing, and with warm water and a sponge the farmer bathed his wound... The farmer listened thoughtfully. "Queer!" he observed. "Mighty queer!"
* "There's something mighty queer about all this, and don't you forget it!"
And I can't help but wonder if faced with the above information would Gerald Allen sweep the Alabama schools of the Hardy Boys books. Was he himself a reader of the Hardy Boys? Maybe this is why he feels the need to sweep the schools, for once when he was a young lad, these satanic verses entered his mind and tried to lure him off the path of righousness. Thank goodness that at the young age of nine I was lurking in the basement of my neighbor's house. For at that time their son, and my brother were serving in Vietnam and he kindly left behind his "Penthouse" magazines for me to study. Without them perhaps I would have come under the clutches of those Hardy Boy's and in the words of that farmer I would have turned "Queer!", "Mighty queer!"
